Job Description:


Budget Title: Staff Assistant (SL-2)
Salary: $47,261 - $52,000

Campus Recreational Services (CRS) offers a multi-faceted program that is designed to encourage positive lifestyle choices and promote lifelong learning through both wellness and physical activity. The department manages the Recreation Center at the East Gym and operates six core program areas: Fitness, Open Recreation, Intramural Sports, Club Sports, Outdoor Pursuits and Wellness Services. Through these programs the department serves approximately 80% of undergraduate students, as well as graduate students, faculty & staff, alumni, University affiliates and community members. Beginning in spring 2024, we are breaking ground on a 75,000 sq. ft. expansion of our facility which is scheduled to be open in 2025. Expansion plans include increased fitness space, three additional multi use courts, an elevated track and space for a climbing wall.

CRS is looking for an enthusiastic team player, ready to assist in the operational and programming aspects of a comprehensive outdoor pursuits program. This position requires experience across multiple technical areas, including but not limited to backpacking, cross-country skiing, winter camping, mountain biking, tree climbing, canoeing, sea kayaking, four-season backcountry travel and expedition leadership.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the overall administration and representation of Outdoor Pursuits program within the department, division and University community
  • Oversee day-to-day office and equipment rental center operational duties
  • Participate in the recruitment, supervision, training and evaluation of Outdoor Pursuits undergraduate and graduate student staff members, both in the office and in field settings
  • Train student staff in equipment utilization, storage and repair as well as outdoor leadership and skills workshops
  • Provide supervision, mentoring and evaluation of student staff
  • Instruct assigned credit classes, lead non-credit programs and provide logistics support of assigned programs
  • Manage outdoor equipment procurement, maintenance, replacement and repair
  • Monitor van fleet maintenance and scheduling; facilitate OUT class and activity transportation planning
  • Assist in venue scouting and determination
  • Assist in the creation of the Outdoor Pursuits annual budget forecast by making purchasing recommendations and reviewing Rental Center revenues/expenses
  • Collect data and maintain statistical reports to track program participation and equipment utilization
  • Monitor monthly ropes course and disc golf course physical conditions
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, overnights and holidays, with the ability to spend extended time in the field with student groups

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in recreation, environmental studies or related field
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in outdoor trip-guiding and/or educational leadership. One academic year of graduate assistantship will be accepted as one year of professional experience.
  • Willingness to obtain the following certifications within the first six months of hire: Level 1 Challenge Course Practitioner and Red Cross First AID/CPR Instructor
  • Knowledge of industry standards to plan and lead courses/programs with best practices in specific technical areas
  • Must be in good physical condition, capable of extensive physical exertion and possess the emotional stability and maturity to care for others over extended time periods and in adverse circumstances
  • Hold a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record and the ability to drive program participants in a 15-passenger van with trailer competency
Preferred:
  • A Master's degree in outdoor recreation, environmental education, environmental studies, organizational development or related field
  • Certification in Wilderness First Aid by a recognized training provider
  • Understanding of fiscal management systems, including point of sale operations, reconciliation, purchase orders and invoicing
  • Experience with supervising an indoor climbing operation, including maintenance, staffing and programming
