We seek an adjunct instructor for Fall 2024 to teach GISP 218 Introduction to GIS course, which provides a fundamental foundation of theoretical and applied skills in geographic information systems (GIS) technology. The course enables students to investigate problems and make decisions that incorporate geography and place as elemental constructs. Utilizing GIS software applications from ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute), students work on a progression of tasks and assignments focused on GIS data collection, manipulation, analysis, output, and presentation.  The lab exercises supplement and reinforce the GIS theory and technology concepts introduced through lectures and discussion.  The course includes a 3-hour block of contact hours per week, plus office hours. The ability to create inclusive learning environments for an increasingly diverse student body will be an important characteristic of the successful candidate.

Dickinson College is a highly selective four-year, independent liberal arts college with 2300 students. It is located 20 minutes west of Harrisburg and is a two-hour drive from Baltimore, Washington DC and Philadelphia.

  • Maintain regular office hours.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a field with heavy reliance on spatial data analysis (e.g, Environmental Studies or Science, Geoscience, Geography, Data Science, Information Technology, or related discipline). Master's degree or 3 years of professional GIS experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and proficiency with ESRI software, including ArcGIS Pro desktop and ArcGIS online applications (e.g., ArcGIS StoryMaps).
  • Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications, online resources, and other technologies for the classroom to develop and build course content and perform administrative duties as needed (posting office hours, syllabi, grades, etc.).
  • Classroom experience teaching at the college or university level preferred.
