Job Summary
The Coordinator of the Writing Center will work with the Tutoring Coordinator and Assistant coordinator to manage the day-to-day operations, workflow, and services of the Writing Center. Duties include managing the Center; supervising and training any writing staff; facilitating promotion and outreach to faculty and students; and coordinating assessment of the Writing Center’s effectiveness.
Job Duties:
1. Conduct tutoring sessions as assigned in any of the three available formats (face-to-face, online, and remote) with students of a variety of experience levels on academic assignments, professional texts, and creative compositions.
2. Work in small groups, or walk-in situations as assigned.
3. Work cooperatively with college faculty, advisors, and other departments to coordinate services to students.
4. Keep accurate records relating to writing services provided to students.
5. Assist with the development and operation of the BCTC Writing Center.
6. Assist with developing and coordinating online writing workshops (in partnership with the FYE Spotlight coordinator),
7. Develop marketing, promotional materials and videos for the writing center.
8. Monitor Writing center correspondence, respond to students’ questions about all steps of the writing process, including invention, research, drafting, revision, and documentation of sources.
9. Collect data, monitor, evaluate, and report on the Writing Center effectiveness and impact (semester statistics, tutor methods, tutor reports, etc.), and analyze quantitative and qualitative data to report on services to promote student success and retention and for strategic planning purposes.
10. Provide students with information about the Writing Center’s on-campus, online, and remote services by conducting Writing Center orientation sessions and acting as a representative at on-campus events, as requested.
11. Support accountability and institutional effectiveness by developing, implementing, and assessing effective procedures that support college operations and foster student success.
12. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree (Education, Psychology, Social Work, or related field) and one year of related experience, or equivalent.
• Advanced computer skills, including working knowledge of the “Comment” and “Track Changes” features of Microsoft Word.
• Familiarity with MLA and APA formats and ability to use a handbook to help students with these and other formatting and documentation guides required in their disciplines.
Preferred Qualifications:
• At least two years of experience in student support services working with community college students, including at-risk, and underrepresented populations.
• Commitment to the mission of the comprehensive community and technical college.
• Demonstrated knowledge of current and promising practices for student learning, development, and retention.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with others.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Experience supervising student employees strongly desired.
