Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

This is manual, semi-skilled work involving the performance of a variety of duties relating to maintenance, repair, construction, equipment operation and general laboring. Work is subject to spot checking for appearance and conformance with instructions and acceptable standards of workmanship. Functional contacts include co-workers, service department employees, and occasionally administrative personnel at the job location, with casual contact with other university staff and students.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
  • Perform rough construction work such as setting forms, pouring and finishing concrete, setting bricks, spreading asphalt and other black-topping material, carrying and setting concrete blocks, laying drainage tile. Dig ditches, break out old concrete and masonry, and help prepare ground for foundations
  • Assist skilled trades personnel as needed. Help measure and lay out work, carry materials and supplies, set up scaffolding and ladders, and perform semi-skilled work in accordance with specific instructions from skilled tradesman or supervisor
  • Operate hand tools, power tools and mechanical equipment as necessary to accomplish work assigned. Clean, oil and make minor repairs to tools and equipment
  • Move, assemble and deliver furniture (desks, filing cabinets, chairs and bookshelves); move, transport and assist in the installation of heavy equipment, electrical transformers, hot water heaters, air conditioners, food supplies, materials and various other items
  • May drive any vehicle or equipment incidental to performance of duties
  • May be assigned to work on special work crews for tasks such as erecting and dismantling portable bleachers; cleanup of stadium, field house, or other large area after special events; install temporary fixtures, route markers, etc
  • Perform related duties as assigned
SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Under direct supervision of Lead, Assistant Foreman or Foreman; receives oral and written instructions daily on work to be performed. Generally receives direction and guidance from skilled trades personnel.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Usually exercises no supervision over others but may occasionally guide and direct laborers of a lower level or helper personnel assisting in work.

  • Full time TEMPORARY employee
  • 7am - 3:30pm or 8am - 4:30pm Mon - Fri
  • 40 hours / week
  • mid May - mid August
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to read and write. Ability to comprehend and apply specific oral and written instructions.
  • One year experience in general construction or maintenance work.
  • General mechanical ability including operation of basic tools and equipment at a semi-skilled level.
  • Mechanical aptitude, above average strength and physical coordination. A person working in this classification will need to be able to grasp, lift, carry and set down heavy (50-75 lb) objects on a daily basis.
  • Ability to wear a respirator and / or self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) as outlined in the “Industrial Standard for Respirator Use”.
  • A valid drivers license may be required.
Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience preferred.

Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $14.50 hourly.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
