Career Pathologist

Salary Range: $88,600/yr. - $166,600/yr.

(Department budgeted salary range: $109,830/yr. - $124,108/yr. Commensurate with experience.)


Under general direction provide timely diagnostic pathology services, including necropsy, histopathology and interpretation of ancillary tests, as required for mammalian and avian specimens with emphasis on disease diagnosis. Provide consultation, advice and guidance to veterinarians and producers regarding livestock, avian and wildlife disease diagnosis, control and prevention. This position will be based at one CAHFS laboratory and will provide diagnostic services at all four CAHFS laboratories as needed, with extensive travel to other CAHFS laboratories expected.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum License/Certification:

  • Board certification or eligibility for board certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) or European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP) required. If not ACVP certified, board certification will be required within three years of the date of initial hire.
  • Current California state veterinary license or California Veterinary Medical Board university license is required. If not licensed, the license should be obtained within 3 months of hire. CAHFS will pay the application cost for a university veterinary license.


Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Experience operating microscopes, necropsy equipment (e.g., mechanical hoist, bandsaw, Stryker saw, surgical & necropsy instruments), computer, laboratory equipment (e.g., biosafety cabinet, pH meters, electronic scales).


Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Knowledge and skills to apply existing theory and research findings to define unusual and complex problems, including, but not limited to, suspected foreign animal diseases and diseases that impact public health, handle sensitive inquiries and confidentiality with animal owners and veterinarians.
  • Knowledge and skills to dispose of hazardous and contaminated materials in a safe manner and in accordance with campus and EH&S policies and procedures.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with a wide variety of individuals including co-workers, clients of CAHFS, and other University units, outside and government agencies, and skills in computer data entry and related software applications.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred License/Certification:

  • ACVP/ECVP Board Certification.


Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Veterinary diagnostic pathology experience.


Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Familiarity with all aspects of a diagnostic laboratory quality system, including documentation, implementation, and compliance with policies and practices in daily work.
