Context of the Job:
The Research Office provides central oversight and leadership for the University research
enterprise. The Office of Laboratory Animal Medicine is one important aspect of the research
enterprise at the UD. The Associate Director for Research Operations is responsible for oversight of staffing and operations of university-wide vivarium’s housing animals used in biomedical research to include: proper housing and husbandry of research animals in compliance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations and policies relating to the humane care and use of laboratory animals; oversight of staff hiring, training, and safety programs, census reporting, billing and other logistical support and assisting with the budget and cost accounting. This position also includes participation in both the design and oversight of renovation and new construction of animal facility space, with minimal impact to ongoing research activities. This position serves as the Office of Laboratory Animal Medicine's primary liaison for vendor relationships and faculty research space needs in the current expanding research program.
Responsibilities of this position also include, in the absence of the Director, making any necessary decisions to maintain regulatory compliance of the animal care program and facilities.
Major Responsibilities:
- Provide oversight of daily operations of two main vivarium’s plus satellite facilities including scheduling of assignments to OLAM staff.
- Controls animal facility access to those individuals, who, after review of training records and credentials, are determined to be properly trained in animal care and use.
- Provide recommendations and implement decisions regarding space allocation or reallocation.
- Develop business process measures to maximize laboratory care services including serving as primary contact with external users of the vivarium. .
- Consult with investigators when writing experimental proposals on issues relating to animal husbandry and care.
- Provide recommendations and implements procedures in coordination with the Director to ensure compliance with federal laws and guidelines. In the absence of the Director, make any necessary decisions to maintain regulatory compliance of the animal care program and facilities.
- Monitor animal research to ensure investigators are following IACUC approved animal
procedures. - Maintain records in accordance with relevant agency guidelines to include the Public Health Service, USDA and State of Delaware.
- Serve on the Animal Facility Safety Committee.
- Participate in animal facility inspections with USDA, IACUC and safety personnel.
- Participate in design and oversight of both new construction of animal facility space and renovation projects.
- Coordinate construction, renovation, maintenance and other space issues to ensure minimal impact to ongoing research activities.
- Assist in grant proposal for renovation and construction projects.
- Identify, establish and develop infrastructure appropriate for the incorporation of research.
- Supervision of monthly census calculations and billing of per diem costs.
- Assist in budget preparations and cost accounting to determine appropriate service fees.
- Coordinate and oversee ordering of all supplies and equipment and serves as primary contact for vendors.
- Effectively operates and maintains equipment.
- Immediate supervisor for the laboratory technicians, cage wash technicians, and work study students. Responsible for hiring and training of personnel.
- Serve as HR liaison
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field and five years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience. AALAS Certification.
- Supervisory level at a PHS-Assured institution.
- Knowledgeable in the operations of animal resource facilities, equipment functions, specialized husbandry procedures and staffing needs.
- Extensive knowledge of regulatory and compliance issues concerning the proper care and use of animals in research.
- Ability to function as a team member.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals at various levels of the University.
- Ability to supervise and train staff, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
- Analytical skills related to site budget preparation, generation of monthly census reports, billing etc.
- Technical skills in common biomethodology of research animals is preferred.
- Experience in vivarium design and commissioning renovation and construction projects is preferred.
