Physical Requirements
This position requires regularly sitting at a computer workstation for extended periods of time and performing tasks with repetitive motions (such as typing). Also involves some exposure to loud noises, blood-borne/airborne pathogens, and combative/violent people.
Shift
Day shift, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. Other days/times as assigned per departmental needs.
Job Summary
The UKHC Insurance Authorization team is currently seeking an Insurance Authorization Specialist to provide standardization, quality, expertise and customer service focus to medical departments. This position will report to the Central Authorization Team Supervisor and will have frequent contact with customers/patients, faculty, physicians, and University personnel. The role will work with third party payers and providers to ensure payer approval of tests and procedures prior to administration.
Duties for this position include confirming all necessary information needed to properly perform and identify billing information needed to maintain compliance with institutional, state, and federal practices. This position will work with third party payers and providers while obtaining and sharing current guidelines. Basic coding knowledge and proficiency in medical terminology are preferred and excellent customer service skills are required.
Primary responsibilities will include obtaining pre-certification and pre-authorization of tests and medication requests by medical providers, as well as working with medical providers to find suitable alternatives to tests or medications that do not meet pre-certification or pre-authorization requirements. This position will require the ability to sit for long periods of time and work in a fast-paced environment. The qualified individual must enjoy working in a team-oriented environment and be able to communicate with a diverse patient/customer population.
This position has been identified as supporting UK HealthCare, which receives funding from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Therefore, all individuals hired into this position must comply with the federal CMS mandate issued in March of 2022. This mandate requires all new hires to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or obtain an approved medical or religious exemption as a condition of employment. Start of employment cannot occur until two weeks after receiving the full COVID-19 vaccination series or upon obtaining an approved exemption. Only vaccines approved by the World Health Organization can be accepted.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
Excellent communication skills and the ability to multi-task and stay organized in a fast-paced environment are needed, as well as knowledge of the insurance authorization process. This position requires exceptional customer service skills.

Preferred Education/Experience
Associate degree in a healthcare-related field and at least three years of healthcare employment experience preferred. Additionally, experience working in a physician practice and basic coding ( CPT, HCPCS and ICD-10) knowledge is also preferred.
