Clinical Oversight: UTC Counseling Center
Basic Function: Mental Health Care professional who works under the direction of the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine to provide counseling and mental health resources for UTC Student-Athletes.
This is a 12-month staff position.
Supervises: Counselor Interns (TBD)
Job Description: This position will provide mental health and wellness counseling services to student-athletes dealing with issues including but not limited to depression, anxiety, eating disorders, substance abuse, physical or emotional trauma or abuse, PTSD, suicidal ideation, adjustment disorder, grief, or other mental health disorders. This position will serve to assist the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine with crisis stabilization in the event of an emergency related to the mental health issues of a student-athlete.
Anticipated Hiring Range: $47,300 - $49,750
Athletics Counselor Duties & Responsibilities:
- Daily counseling sessions regarding mental health, behavioral health, and emotional support needs with student-athletes of all sports.
- Coordination of on-campus and or community resources to assist student-athletes in managing mental health and emotional support needs.
- Assist with coordination of service delivery for special cases including substance use, disordered eating, and severe-persistent mental illness education and treatment.
- Documentation of all clinical interactions with student-athletes, and appropriate referrals to medical specialists as needed.
- Communicate directly with the Head Team Physician, Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine, contracted clinical psychiatrist (i.e., online platform or face to face), sports coaches, sports athletic trainers, and administration regarding the ongoing management of student-athletes’ emotional and behavioral needs within the parameters of medical/psychiatric information release.
- Communicate to Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and Head Team Physician major medical issues of student-athletes such as Emergency Department transportation, hospitalizations, crisis intervention, and other significant issues.
- Coordinate patient care with UTC Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
- Coordinate crisis intervention in communication with Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and/or Head Team Physician, for student-athletes experiencing severe or emergency mental health events with resultant safety concerns, requiring urgent stabilization/hospitalization and/or medical care.
- Assist with providing daytime, evening, and weekend crisis intervention and emergency services in situations involving individual student-athletes or teams with support from Student Counseling Services and after-hours crisis line as needed.
- Coordinate pre-participation physical exam mental health screening process and follow up with Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and/or Head Team Physician.
- Participates in team-specific Sport Performance meetings to promote the optimal environment for health, wellness, safety, and performance excellence using best practices, evidence-based strategies, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
- Knowledge of behavioral health concerns and mental health disorders in college-age populations.
- Knowledge of diversity issues impacting student-athlete well-being.
- Ability to be an interdisciplinary team player.
- Ability to function independently.
- Ability to perform counseling services for multiple types and severities of mental health issues, including individual psychotherapy sessions, family counseling, group counseling, and consultations.
- Exceptional communication skills and ability to work effectively as a member of the Sports Medicine Team.
- Ability to perform medical record keeping for documentation of medical interventions.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or other mental health-related fields.
- Licensed (or license eligible) clinical professional counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or Clinical Psychologist in the State of Tennessee.
- Minimum of 2 years previous experience in counseling, social work, psychology, counseling, or other mental health fields, including time spent in supervised practicum, internship, or advanced internship experience.
- Experience working directly with high school or college-aged individuals for mental health and wellness counseling.
- Specialized training in sport psychology (e.g., training, practicum, etc.) and/or AASP certification.
- Experience working with students with learning disabilities.
- Knowledge of community-based mental health resources.
- Knowledge of best practices regarding student-athletes mental health and performance.
