Chief Purpose of this position: The Division of Nephrology of Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine seeks applicants for a Faculty Physician and Chair of the Division of Nephrology. The incumbent will establish and maintain excellence in teaching, research and clinical service by overseeing the teaching and mentoring of medical students, residents and nephrology fellows in inpatient and outpatient settings for Nephrology; supporting and mentoring faculty in research and clinical trials, and working with institutional and administrative leaders to attain the objectives of Virginia Commonwealth University and VCU Health System including patient safety, patient satisfaction, maintenance and enhancement of public trust and fiscal health.
Position Responsibilities:
Teaching: Oversight of Fellowship Education in Nephrology as Division Chair providing guidance and mentorship to the Fellowship Program Director and faculty involved with teaching. Teach fellows and residents using adult teaching methods that enhance and encourage active learning and ongoing professional development. Complete medical student, resident and fellows evaluations. Participate in other Nephrology educational activities including resident didactic series, conferences, morning report, Nephrology and Internal Medicine Grand Rounds and other educational duties assigned by the department.
Research: Support faculty members in a growing clinical research program; facilitate the growth of clinical research including in collaborative efforts with national organizations. May participate in clinical and administrative research according to skills, interest and funding. Provide mentoring and supervision of fellows and residents in research and QI initiatives. Research opportunities may include performance improvement initiatives or formal extramurally funded investigations and participation may be as principal investigator or co-investigator.
Service: Strategic leadership of Division of Nephrology. Work with institutional and administrative leaders to attain the objectives of Virginia Commonwealth University and VCU Health System including patient safety, patient satisfaction, maintenance and enhancement of public perception and fiscal health.
Clinical: Provide excellent patient care in Nephrology, including clinic service in inpatient and outpatient settings.
Administrative: Serve as Chair for the Division of Nephrology providing leadership to a division with history of a strong clinical presence and expertise. Comply promptly with billing, documentation, credentialing and other administrative requirements of the department.
Required Qualifications:
- Board certification or eligibility in Nephrology
- Completion of Fellowship in Nephrology
- Requires clinical and administrative leadership experience
- Requires an interest in teaching and growth in an academic setting
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
- Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a diverse team providing effective communication, both verbal and written, and an interest in furthering the research, scholarly and academic missions of the division
